Cool Sites

I'm starting to think about redesigning my website again. That'll make this the shortest-lived design I've ever had... not that I've had all that many different designs.

In search of inspiration, I hit Google to look for some "best of the web" types of sites. Found several that I really liked:

  • The Best Designs, which itself is clean and good-looking, with minimal ads and other obnoxious stuff to distract from the stars - the sites being showcased. Plus it shows a thumbnail of each site, which is a million times preferable to "best of" sites that only include a list of the site names.

  • CSS Remix - similar to above, except viewers can vote on the entries. And the site itself is quite slick.

  • Best Web gallery - another beautifully designed site showcasing other great sites.

  • Cool Home Pages has a more obnoxious homepage, so I'm linking to their "previous" gallery, which gets down to business and shows us the sites.

One thing I'm noticing is that the definition of a "cool" or "best" site is, in addition to having good (clean/attractive/artistic/functional) design, it uses Flash. The interactivity is quite appealing. I may do my next site design in Flash... *if* I can set it up so that search engines, Lynx users, and blind folks can still get to the content of the site.
